- Gorge Day: Believe it or not, the hCG diet actually begins with two days of gorging on foods that most diets tend to avoid. During these first two days, you are able to eat anything you want and are encouraged specifically to eat foods that are high in fat. During this time you will also receive your first injection or pill of hCG. It takes around three days for hCG to completely enter a person’s system and the consumption of fatty foods is designed to help kickstart the hCG in the body. While this part of the diet only lasts for two days, a relatively small time frame in the scheme of things, it is one of the most important parts of the entire diet.
- hCG Cycle and Diet: On the third day of the hCG diet, the true diet really begins. During days 3 through 23 (or 3 through 40 if you are doing a 40 day cycle), you will receive daily injections or pills of hCG and will be restricted to a diet of only 500 calories. It is during this time that the bulk of the weight loss will happen. Because you will be on such a restricted calorie diet, the hCG in your body helps to naturally encourage your body to nourish itself with fat stores that you already possess.
- Diet Continues: Days 24 through 26 (or days 41 through 43 if you are on the 40 day diet cycle) the daily injections or pills will stop; however, you will continue to maintain a 500 calorie diet. During this time, the hCG will slowly make its way out of your system and it is important to maintain the 500 calorie diet to ensure that as much fat is burned away as possible.
- Aftermath: After completing the diet, you will need to spend one to three weeks in what is known as the “maintenance” period. During this time you will be able to eat mostly whatever you want; however, it is important to steer clear of excessive starches and sugar intake. At the four week mark, starches and sugars can start to be reintroduced into the diet and you should continue to weigh yourself every morning. If after six weeks you have still not achieved the weight loss results that you were hoping for, you may begin another hCG diet cycle as long as you are still in good health.
