In today’s post, we are going to go over some of the health risks associated with being overweight. We hope that by the end of this short blog series all of our readers have a better understanding of the risks that come with an unhealthy body weight.

Your Weight Affects More Than You Think

While most people are well aware of the impact that weight has on their quality of life, it has become a subject that is increasingly important. Across the nation, more and more adults are experiencing the negative health effects associated with an unhealthy BMI and, in our opinion, this is one of the most alarming health trends in the last 50 years. Below we have listed a few of the risks associated with an unhealthy weight.

  • High Blood Pressure: One of the most apparent health risks associated with an unhealthy weight is an increase in an individual’s blood pressure. According to the Centers For Disease Control around 70 million adults in the United States suffer from high blood pressure. Increased blood pressure has been associated with a plethora of health risks, most notably an increase in the risk of heart disease. As blood pressure rises, the heart has to work harder to make sure that blood is properly circulated throughout the body. This extra strain is not good for the heart and, if left unaddressed, can have serious health implications for a person.
  • High Cholesterol: Along with high blood pressure, individuals with an unhealthy body weight are more likely to suffer from high levels of cholesterol. High cholesterol readings are a result of high levels of low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides in the blood stream with a correspondingly low level of high-density lipoproteins. If left alone, high cholesterol levels can lead to the buildup of plaque in an individual’s arteries and blood vessels. Not only does this make it harder for blood to properly flow, in some cases it can cause heart attack or stroke.
