What is a Spider Vein?

Before we begin, we feel that it is important to spell out exactly what spider veins are. Not to be confused with varicose veins, which are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn, spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that are most commonly located on a person’s legs. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin and, for the most part, are harmless besides that fact that they affect the cosmetic appearance of the area of the body in which they are located. From a medical standpoint, spider veins are simply dilated superficial blood vessels that often start to spread across people’s legs as they age. Many factors can increase a person’s risk of developing spider veins including hereditary factors, use of birth control, and being in a profession that requires you to stand for long periods of time.

How Does Spider Vein Removal Work?

When it comes to spider vein removal, there are two main ways that the majority of spider veins are removed. Below, we have listed both procedures.

  • Sclerotherapy: The most common treatment for spider vein removal, and the one that we perform here at New Beginnings Medical, is sclerotherapy. This option for spider vein removal involves injecting a solution into the veins that then forces them to collapse, stopping blood flow and reducing the visibility of the veins under the skin. After the treatment is completed, the veins will turn into scars, fading in appearance over the course of a few weeks.
  • Laser Treatment: While less common than sclerotherapy, laser treatment is often used in cases where the spider veins have a reddish appearance. Through years of research, it was found that spider veins of this color respond best to laser treatment because they are much finer than spider veins that are blue or purple in appearance. Because these veins are so small, it is often impossible to perform an injection in these sites.
