Spider Veins Develop for a Variety of Reasons

Even though spider veins are one of the most common vein conditions in the world, we have found that few people actually understand why spider veins develop. Is it simply something that happens with age? Are certain people more predisposed to developing them than others? Do other medical conditions affect the development? To answer these questions, we have listed out the most common causal factors below.

  • Age: Barring some major advancement in the next few years, everyone ages. Getting older is something that everyone has to deal with and, unfortunately, age does play a role in the development of spider veins. As we age, our veins tend to become weaker. After decades of making sure that blood is properly transported throughout the body, our veins can get a little tired. This can result in the valves located within the vein becoming weakened which, in turn, leads to the development of spider veins.
  • Genetics: Like many medical conditions, spider veins are affected by hereditary traits. If members of your immediate family have spider veins then, chances are, you are more likely to develop spider veins as well. While it might seem unfair, knowing that you are predisposed to developing spider veins means that you can take proactive steps to reduce the appearance of veins when they develop.
  • Hormones: In general, women are more susceptible to spider veins because of the various hormones that lead to their development. Hormones released during pregnancy or menopause can lead to spider veins due to the sudden change in hormones that both of these conditions cause. Additionally, birth control pills can lead to an increase in estrogen and progestogen levels, both of which can have a major effect on the development of spider veins in multiple areas of the body.
  • Weight: Being overweight, especially if a person is obese, greatly increases that chance that spider veins will form. This is due to the fact that excessive weight puts excess pressure on the leg veins, making it harder for the veins to effectively limit the amount of blood that is able to pass through the veins at any given time. Additionally, overweight people tend to be less active than people within a normal weight range, meaning that spider veins have more of a chance to develop. Lastly, an overweight person’s heart must work harder to pump blood throughout the body which puts more pressure on their vascular system as a whole.
  • Abdominal Conditions: Believe it or not, chronic abdominal issues such as abdominal tumors or long term constipation issues can lead to the development of spider veins. This is due to the fact that these conditions place a considerable amount of stress on the abdomen which then causes additional stress to be placed on the veins in the legs.
